Record Breaking Year in Economic Impact for Rocky Top Sports World

Rocky Top Sports World records $46.9 million in its 7th year of operation


GATLINBURG, TN – In its 7th year of operation, Rocky Top Sports World welcomed more than 135,700 athletes, spectators, families and friends to Gatlinburg. The award-winning complex contributed $46.9 million in economic impact during the 2020-2021 fiscal year. “Rocky Top Sports World has surpassed all the expectations since its campus opened in Gatlinburg in 2014. The leap into sports tourism has proven to be a vital factor in Gatlinburg’s economic growth over the past seven years,” Gatlinburg Mayor Mike Werner said.

The venue hosted more than 90 events on-site where 25 weekends involved both indoor and outdoor events taking place simultaneously. The venue more than doubled bookings on weekdays compared to last year, coming in at 21 total weekday events.

“The City of Gatlinburg is extremely pleased with the performance of Rocky Top Sports World since 2014,” Gatlinburg City Manager Cindy Cameron Ogle said. “The continued economic impact of the facility continues to fulfill the vision of what Gatlinburg and Sevier County thought Rocky Top Sports World would mean to our community. The City offers our thanks to the staff of Rocky Top Sports World for helping make the facility one of the nation’s most attractive venues for travel sports.”

Notable year seven achievements for Rocky Top Sports World include being selected as the All-Star Multipurpose Sports Venue and the All-Star Indoor Sports Venue by SportsEvents Media Group. The 2021 awards mark the fifth year the venue has earned Readers’ Choice awards.

Rocky Top Sports World hosted the inaugural Gatlinburg All-American Bowl in December of 2020 where more than 120 athletes from eight states participated. The venue also played host to the Kohl’s Kicking National Elite Camp and National Scholarship Camp which brought athletes from 45 states to the area. Kohl’s Kicking is slated to return to Rocky Top Sports World in July of 2021, 2022 and 2023.

For the upcoming 2021-2022 year, Rocky Top Sports World will play host to new tournaments and events such as the venue’s first adult kickball event, Turf Wars put on by Play Mars Sports.

The venue will also hold successful return events such as four weekend occurrences of the Smoky Mountain Cup hosted by High School Cup, which will showcase the largest number of participating teams to date. Other notable returning events include fifteen bookings with National Soccer Events and FC Alliance, whose events contributed to nearly $10 million of the 2020-2021 economic impact total.

“We are thrilled to see the recent economic impact report from Rocky Top Sports World. The facility has played an intricate part in our area’s recovery and record economic growth. We are proud to have this world-class facility in Sevier County,” commented Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters.

Rocky Top Sports World Earns 2021 Readers’ Choice Awards

GATLINBURG, TN – Rocky Top Sports World has received honors in two of the SportsEvents Media Group’s 2021 Readers’ Choice Awards categories. The 2021 awards mark the fifth year the Gatlinburg, Tennessee sports complex has earned Readers’ Choice awards.

“The City of Gatlinburg is pleased to hear of these two distinctions awarded to Rocky Top Sports World and we offer our congratulations to their staff on these well-deserved honors to make the facility nationally recognized. Gatlinburg and Sevier County’s commitment and vision to make Rocky Top Sports World a reality continues to pay dividends nearly a decade later,” said Gatlinburg City Manager Cindy Cameron Ogle.

Each year, the Readers’ Choice Awards recognize the excellence in events, planners, venues and destinations across the sport tourism industry. SportsEvents Media Group received hundreds of nominees and nearly 4,000 votes across all categories. Rocky Top Sports World Hosts World Cube Association

GATLINBURG, TN – Rocky Top Sports World, managed by Sports Facilities Management, hosted a World Cube Association competition for the 3rd year this past weekend, December 7-8th, 2019. The World Cube association governs competitions for mechanical puzzles such as the Rubik’s Cube.

This year’s event had 100 total competitors who journeyed from as far as China, India and Malaysia. The United States was well represented with competitors from California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee and Wisconsin who aimed to showcase their skills.

The puzzle events included traditional cubes, ranging in size from 2x2x2 up to 7x7x7, as well as pyraminx, a triangular Rubik’s Cube, square-1, a shape-shifting 3-layered twisty puzzle and skewb, a corner-turning twisty puzzle. The competition also included a number of rounds with competitors blindfolded or tasked with utilizing just their feet to solve.

The World Cube Association will be hosting another competition at Rocky Top Sports World next year on December 5-6th, 2020. Rocky Top Sports World Earns International Venue Award

GATLINBURG, TN – Rocky Top Sports World, managed by Sports Facilities Management, has received a 2019 Fitness and Nutrition Award from Global Health and Pharma. Rocky Top Sports World was named the “Best Indoor and Outdoor Sports Campus – South East USA.” Rocky Top Sports World is now recognized both nationally and internationally for their facilities and customer service.

“We are thrilled that the international community has now been introduced to Gatlinburg through our facility,” said Rocky Top Sports World General Manager, Jim Downs. “Our unique combination of indoor and outdoor facilities nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains allows us to bring thousands to Gatlinburg each year.”

Rocky Top Sports World Honored as a 2019 Champion of Economic Impact

GATLINBURG, TN – Rocky Top Sports World and the Smoky Mountain Cup have been named one of Sports Destination Management’s 2019 Champions of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism. Rocky Top Sports World chose to nominate Smoky Mountain Cup for this award due to their growing impact each year since 2014 when the event began. In 2019, the Smoky Mountain Cup provided $7.6 million in economic impact for the city of Gatlinburg and Sevier County across its four event dates.

Zach Schrandt and Van Harper, the event owners for Smoky Mountain Cup, have continued to develop their high school based soccer tournaments. The event expanded from three dates in 2018 to four dates in 2019.

“As Sevier County natives, we are exceptionally proud that we have been able to build one of the nation’s premier high school soccer tournament series. Our tournaments generate a significant amount of revenue for local businesses and our soccer community. Since 2014, we have hosted over 350 schools from 16 states, attracting multiple first-time visitors to Gatlinburg and the surrounding area,” commented Smoky Mountain Cup co-founder Schrandt.

The Smoky Mountain Cup dates for 2020 include March 19-22, March 26-29, August 20-23, and August 27-30.
