The Top 5 Youth Sports Movies of All Time

A movie night can be the perfect bonding experience for a youth sports team! Gathering the whole team together to watch a classic film filled with underdog heroes and uplifting themes is just the thing to inspire your players. Of course, not every movie you watch has to have a thoughtful message; sometimes an evening full of belly laughs is just what your team needs. To help you plan the perfect movie night, Rocky Top Sports World has put together a guide to the top five youth sports movies of all time.

1. Little Giants

Becky O’Shea wants to play on her uncle Kevin’s Pee-Wee Football team, the Cowboys, but even though she has the talent, she is cut during tryouts for being a girl. Determined not to give up, Becky convinces her nerdy father Danny to form a rival football team composed of her misfit friends who were also cut from the Cowboys. Dubbed the “Little Giants”, this ragtag group must defeat the Cowboys in order to become the official Pee-Wee Football team for their small town in Ohio.

Starring Ed O’Neill and Rick Moranis, this hilarious comedy is the ultimate feel-good movie. Little Giants is rated PG.

2. Air Bud

When 12-year old Josh Framm moves from Virginia to Washington following his father’s death, this shy boy is in desperate need of a friend. Fortunately, Josh quickly finds a new best bud: a runaway golden retriever with the incredible ability to shoot a basketball using his nose. Renamed “Buddy”, Josh’s four-legged pal ultimately joins his middle school basketball team and becomes its all-star player.

Air Bud is a classic Disney movie with a lot of heart. The film is rated PG.

3. Remember the Titans

Remember the Titans tells the inspiring true story of the integration of the T.C. Williams High School football team in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971. Denzel Washington stars as Herman Boone, the African-American head football coach who must convince his team to put aside their differences and unite for a common cause.

The film does a great job of mixing edge-of-your-seat sports action and an important message about tolerance. Remember the Titans is rated PG.

4. The Big Green

As part of an exchange program, British teacher Anna Montgomery is placed in a tiny school in the small town of Elma, Texas. In order to motivate her underachieving students, Anna introduces them to “the beautiful game” and forms the school’s first soccer team. With a little help from the town’s out-of-shape sheriff, Tom Palmer, Anna helps transform her uncoordinated athletes into the pride of Elma.

Olivia d’Abo and Steve Guttenberg star in this crowd-pleasing comedy. The Big Green is rated PG.

5. Rudy

Daniel Eugene “Rudy” Ruettiger desperately wants to play football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. However, he is only 5’6″ and 165 pounds, his grades are poor, and his family is not well off. Despite these tremendous obstacles, Rudy perseveres and demonstrates what is possible when you never abandon your dream.

Based on a true story, Rudy is a heartwarming movie that is guaranteed to inspire. The film is rated PG.
