Rocky Top Sports World Hosts Special Olympics Tennessee 2020 Winter Games
Rocky Top Sports World is known for hosting the largest, most prestigious sporting events in Tennessee and across the southeast. Each year, the sports complex welcomes thousands of athletes and their families to their destination for volleyball tournaments, cheer competitions, lacrosse championships and more. On January 27th, Rocky Top Sports World had the honor of hosting the basketball portion of the Special Olympics Tennessee 2020 Winter Games. This was the inaugural year basketball was offered as part of the Winter Games. Rocky Top Sports World joined the Ober Gatlinburg as a venue for the events where other events including speed skating, alpine skiing and snowboarding competitions are held.
“Being a part of the inaugural basketball skills competition for the 2020 State Winter Games was a great experience,” said the venue’s General Manager, Jim Downs. “Rocky Top Sports World is excited to grow our relationship with Special Olympics Tennessee. Our team is already looking forward to next year.”
Athletes competing had the opportunity to partake in a basketball skills competition as well as fun basketball drills. There was an award ceremony once the competition was completed. In total 50 athletes competed in the Winter Games basketball portion and more than 400 athletes competed in the Games.
The Winter Games also included Opening Ceremonies on Sunday, January 26th at the Gatlinburg Convention Center.
Special Olympics Tennessee VP Marketing & Development, Amy W. Parker shared, “The excitement for our 2020 State Winter Games was enhanced by adding a basketball skills component. That component offers up an opportunity and a whole new world for some of the younger athletes who may not have the opportunity to compete in the traditional winter sports competitions. I cannot wait to see what we can do at Rocky Top Sports World in the future.”
